This is why the FN have such a bad rep among alot of people.

SOMASS SOCKEYE BULLETIN # 5 – 2010 Date: July 16, 2010

NEXT WEEK'S FISHING PLANS:
Aboriginal – First Nations fisheries have reached allocation levels for the re-forecast run-size. No fisheries authorized.

Do you think they will be fishing? Hell yeah they will be.

What a joke, they are above everything else including conservation.

One final thing to add to my post, I have heard that this gillnet opening this week will allow them right into the harbour/river mouth like they do with the chinook fisheries, which would be the first time in history from what i've been told.

So really is the FN trying to look bad to anyone who has a clue on what's going on with allocation totals now?

I was out at papermill for my lunch break the other day and while I was there for 30 minutes I had 3 gill net boats come back from fishing even though they are now fishing above their allocated food fish total and the guys were reporting to each other what they got...

"How was the fishing today?" One guy asked.

"Great! I hauled in 300 fish, think it's time to take a break and go home and eat." One fellow replied back.

"Nice catch I only managed 200 fish for now." The third guy put in.

Ontop of that I see they had a beach seine just finishing and were picking fish out of the net in which they had a whole 16 ft aluminum boat filled with yellow coolers filled to the brim with sockeye. My guesstimate would be 150-200 fish as they filled the back of a new F150 with two rows of these coolers.

Before I left there was a guy yelling to one of his buddies about to leave and head out that he can see a school of sockeye waiting to go up the falls there and sure enough the guy went right to the narrows and dropped his gillnets from one beach to the other to ensure he got them.

This is after the latest somass sockeye bulletin saying that no more authorized fishing allowed by FN and the postings at the boat launches saying "STOP FISHING."

I highly stress that people respect DFO's ruling here and stop people from buying anymore fish on the side of the road as they are only feeding this over fishing now. Just because it's a bumper crop doesn't mean anything until the numbers are set in stone there is no reason to over fish a healthy run if you already passed your total allocation.

I know many people blame DFO for most of the short comings, but sectors need to take responsibility aswell.

You won't see many people that respect a resource say well I limited out early today but there are so many fish why not catch a few more what will it hurt?

At least the forest will be well fertilized in Port Alberni.

I agree with Tasteless last statement about respecting these resources. I have always heard that that is why the FN are always protecting trees and such, but now that the can make a profit on something that they have b1tched to the government that it is there "right" to fish like their grandfathers and so on.

I don't know about anyone else's opinion or thoughts about the FN's but the way this is going, we'll be having more of a stink around town when they are to ignorant to keep them. Less sockeye for those who actually are in need of the fish for a living ( comercial boys) .

End of rant.

Didn't see any nets and only 2 signs along the road coming back into town last night. Must have missed some development or another...
