But don't you know they release all non targeted species back with as little harm as possible if they are caught in the nets!

But yeah I don't see many if any chinooks being hooked in the tidal zone while people are targeting sockeye if anything they end up in the FN gillnets.

As for the net dam set up for the past four years in front of the river mouth in the inlet I got nothing for ya there lol.

Hey Lance,

Quote:
Updated from Bob Cole

Hello media,
Just off the phone from an extra-ordinary meeting of the Area 23 Harvest committee and it has been decided that as optimum escapement targets have or are already met into both lake systems.

The commercial fishers have lobbied successfully for additional fisheries this week.
Our rec sector expressed our concerns and hopes that the long weekend warriors from all over would still have some success fishing Sockeye after another 70,000 to 90,000 are taken out on top of the 90,000 already taken this week.

So the plan, as I got it, is that the Area D Gill-net fleet of 60 to 70 boats will fish from 6 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. Friday morning for 30,000ish Sockeye to catch the balance of this week's allocation and possibly more and the Area B seiners will fish from 4 p.m. Wednesday until midnight Thursday for 65,000 pieces or more if the run size estimate goes up Thursday at 1 p.m.

The gill-net fleet will fish from Pochahantas in, the first day, and the outside line will move in to Bilton Point the second day.

The dozen or so seiners are to stay inside Dunsmuir to start and possibly move out to Sproat Narrows after Thursday's meeting.

I recommend that rec fishers fish in Nahmint or below Pocahontas for best results before Sunday remembering that Nahmint closes at 12:00 a.m. Sunday August 1st. and Chup to Hocking also becomes non-retention of Chinook for the balance of the season.

Cheers,
Bob

Hope that helps your decesion making on where to fish for sockeye in the inlet this long weekend.

There`s no point fishing the inlet for Socks the commies will continue to get openings until they are all gone. Probably best to drag the boat to the Nook or Uke.

Which is a shame on a long weekend the town is losing out on revenue when people are turned away from fishing sockeye in the canal because there is commercial boats from the mouth of the river and out.

But "optimum escapement target" has been reached so anything out there is free game and clean up for the commercials because we all know there arn't enough chinooks from that beat up run from the commercials years ago for an opening so just sick them on the sockeye.

Amazing how they can justify closing down the shore fishery at Papermill & below by claiming it is necessary to protect early chinook from the 30 or so single barbless hook shore anglers who might accidentally hook one & then turn the full bag fleet loose for essentially unmonitored raping & pillaging in the canal. I'm sure not a single chinook will be harmed by the miles of nylon walls about to descend on them. Right before a long weekend too, what perfect timing to screw the rec. sector out of a golden opportunity to market the fishery to thousands of its fold & bring in very muchly needed revenue to PA. I'm sure the pittance the commercial fishery will bring in with it's already flooded sockeye market, will more than make up for all the lost revenue that food, lodging, gas, tackle, etc. would have brought over a long weekend. I can't believe these guys can still get away with this kind of crap. It definitely shows who has the better lobbyists because none of their explanations for what they are doing even make the remotest bit of sense, so it obviously has to be politically motivated. The only tiny bit of good that might come out of all of this is that hopefully, now that the commercial fleet is done vacuuming up all the sockeye, there might just be a reason to deny them ANY openings on chinook & coho. There might actually still be a shot at having a successful salmon derby this year IF DFO sticks to their target of 57 million eggs ( 7 for RCH & 50 natural ) & doesn't have any phantom run size increases to BS their way into another unwarranted commercial opening. See Somass chinook 2009 for definition of "Gross Incompetence"

Boy, this really says it all........the commies lobbied successfully & the rec sector expressed concerns....then proceeded to bend over & say " take me big boy like you took all those sockeye but be gentle because springs are coming and there's no nookie like chinookie"

Thank God that they closed the river and got rid of the 20-30 hooks that would kill 20-30 sockeye a day... And now the 1 or 2 springs returning a week will be safe too! Well at least until DFO lets the gill netters kill all of them a week before the derby.

Returning from Bamfield yesterday turned into a nightmare front of the Nahmint.
The whole channel was covered with nets and even being careful did float into one of the nets. Although there was only a minor tear in the net the confortation that followed was unbelievable being told they were going to sink my boat etc. Pulling along side of me to ask for cash on the spot a punch was thrown at my fishing partner just missing his head.

I would strongly suggest to DFO that warning signs be placed at both ends of the opening and a path be open for sporties to be able to get from point A to B in the channel. The nets are next to impossible to spot when the waves are up.

On a lighter note, Fishing at Kirby, King Edward and Swale it was spotty but managed to some mid 20-s with Green spackleback hootchies at 50'-60'.

Cheers Dodi,

I have travelled that channel and have encountered the same mentality. It is a water course and should be available to all who wish to travel. It is amazing how plugged that channel can become when a few commercial boats lay their nets. I agree that they should (must?) leave passage room. The nets are very difficult to observe under some conditions and, while everyone who travels that corridor is vigilent, accidents will occur if they do not leave room. I have had to back track several times in order to make passage.

However, if they threaten you or, as in this case attempt assault, simply take down their boat/vessel name, discription of the 'individual' and report them immediately to RCMP, Transport Canada and DFO. That type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. The cowboy image that they own the seas and resources is no longer tolerable and the sooner that they understand that the resources belong to all the sooner we will be on the path to solutions rather than confrontations.
