from the fisheries notice.

Large recreational fleets are expected during daylight hours in Alberni Inlet.
Fishers are asked to minimize their wake when travelling.
The gill net fleet is also requested to mark their nets with 5 additional white
floats along the corkline to increase the visibility of nets to passing vessels.

I agree - if not for yourself and partner you should report them for the next guy they may threaten.

These types of situations can get ugly fast with gaff hooks, knives etc around, there could be a scuffle next thing you know somebody reaches for something or get tossed in the water and drowns.

If you haven't gotten your sockeye yet, there is still time. Even though the gill netters have been hitting it hard over the weekend, the socks keep coming. Fished Macktush Bay out to the Hocking Point boundary this morning. Started with spring gear to check it out, but no joy so switched to sockeye set up and was into fish within 10 minutes. I only needed one for my two day limit, but had one bump then a triple. One took hook, other released himself and the third made my morning. Real nice fish still. Wrap up and go home. Other boats were hitting fish with several limits taken. Not near as many fish showing on the sounder (wonder why) but certainly seemed to be enough. Still using short leaders (20") 18' behind the ball running a dummy flasher and 2 lines per ball. Run balls at 77 & 85 ft.

We ran to the outside on Sunday and there were Sockeye jumping the entire trip. Must be lots to come yet. Seiners are out heavy this morning and the gill netters are lining up for another night. Over the weekend I could count 20+ gill netters from my campsite. Bloody wonder there are any fish left.

It's not over yet. 4 of us headed out yesterday not knowing what to expect. On the water fishing at 0700 hrs and by 1200 we had out limit of 16. They were mostly in the 100 ft range and were caught primarily across from China Creek away from where everyone else seemed to be fishin.

Maybe one more trip :D

How's the fishing out there recently, heard that they have been basically commercial fishing out there everyday for the last week and alittle are the rec guys still doing ok?

Quote:
Hello All,

Another conference call and another commercial extension!
The seine fleet (however many are left) will continue fishing until 6 p.m. Friday for an additional 20,000 pieces (80,000 total this week alone) as "clean up" of what's left in the upper inlet. Same Southern boundary 1.2 miles below Dunsmuir and due East to below Underwood Cove
Please watch for nets and the direction of their sets on your travels up and down the inlet.
Our position regarding the negative economic affect on the community as a whole falls on deaf ears.
They say they aren't encountering many Chinook as yet, which is bad and worse news.
First of all, we would expect Chinook to start to show some early abundance in the upper inlet by now and if they do show in the next couple of days, the seine fleet will have a further negative impact even though they assure us that all Chinook are released unharmed!
Let's hope that the Chinook are a little late and that some more Sockeye move in, in the meantime.

I won't guarantee it, but that should be the last of the commercial fleet for this year. They have opportunities for 4.5 million of the 12.5 million expected and arriving Fraser Sockeye and Chinook openings in Nootka Sound and elsewhere.
Cheers,
Bob

Was out yesterday morning for socks. Was very slow we only managed 2 fish. We had a ton of "nibbles" and there definately turning darker. Many other boats reported very few as well.
