For years now I've been a strictly Anchovy guy when it comes to using bait for salmon, while I know other guys use only herring.

I gotta admit I don't think I've ever actually found an anchovy in a salmons belly, so if matching the hatch is your thing it would seem herring is the best choice but its tough to mess with a proven killer like a nice anchovy.

I'm curious what other members run, anchovy or herring, although I think I know what the results are going to be.

Some folks can't roll cut plugs so it seems to me so they use anchovy instead. My biggest fish have always been caught on cut plugs. But the teaser heads for anchovy make it easier for most, plus with the colors to choose from these days. I don't blame them.

Cheers All,

I have used way more herring than anchovey but, having said that, there have been times that the only proven ticket for a time and place has been anchovey and, as such, I am fine with moving over and fishing with what is working.

I CAN roll herring but I think anchovy is better on the Inside fisheries as they more closely duplicate the average size of the baitfish (feed) on the inside most of the time. Sure, there are thousands of tons of large herring here now but they don't stay. We tend to have juvenile/immature herring in here most of the times which is closer in size. Most other bait on the inside is on the small side so why not duplicate!?

PLUS, throwing an anchovy in one of dozens of teaser heads available everywhere makes it easy.

I like to use herring and do when fishing Barkley Sound or off Nanaimo mostly because that seems the pure way to fish. That said, since I have only caught one fish on a herring, I almost always run an anchovie as well. When fishing in the canal, it seems herring don't work at all, so anchovies or lures/hootchies are the tools of choice.

Yes I agree and since I like going a bit faster Anchovy gives the roll that fish like to chase, I learned this on the outside long ago.

As to Teaser Heads it's crazy how many colours there are a person always needs a few more!

Still haven't quite got the single hook roll down not enough practice I guess but one day we just might be restricted to single barbless.

exactly as RBF stated I alkso think its easier to use chovie and you could spend weeks trying all the teaer heads which could be fun

my favorite bait is a fresh needle fish, which I believe are a salmons favorite snack, they're hard to get your hands on but they'll pretty much out fish anything I've found, you just throw them in a rhys davis teaser and away you go,

If you suspect the fish are on needlefish, cut open the belly of the first one you catch
i have salvaged up to 30 out of one fish and often they are in good shape.
Rig one up in a tiny teaser and go whack em !
