I'm leaving Nanaimo at 3:30 today for tonight and tomorrow...surprised my post of a month and a half ago is the last report...guess it's not too hot. Heading straight to Swale for a quick evening troll before anchoring in the Broken Group tonight. We'll play it by ear tomorrow. Probably stop for some sockeye on the way home tomorrow evening. Can't go wrong in the Sound starting off with a T-Rex hootchie on one side and an anchovy on the other. Usually monitor 06 over there.

fished inside (Swale and Kirby to Edward King) Saturday morning...very slow. Only saw 1 fish hooked and it spat the hook at them right at the net (Kirby). We lost one nice one beside the boat and kept 1 small one for the bbq.

We got a chance to get out to Effingham on Sunday, fished in the pocket between Meer's Bluff, Austin, Cree and the rocks. Got there a bit late, but it seemed like lots of boats were getting fish. We managed two, 11 & 15lbs, lost a couple and let a couple babies go. When it got a bit bumpy there, we retreated to Diplock. Got couple small ones we let go and did a long line release at the boat of about a 10lber. Great day for us. Friend fishing same area with nephews, limited out by 1100 with 8 fish, biggest 27, smallest around 10. Something to see a wheel barrow full of springs.
Only disappointment was that they were white springs and not our first choice, but they smoke up nice and when we cooked the balls off a couple steaks were pretty fine fare.
Also seems to be no end to the sockeye, while we didn't catch any on our trip out, they were jumping all the way from Effingham to Macktush. Especially around Killdonan and Bilton.
Next weekend we'll take another run at them.

Got out to Bamfield on friday and saturday for 2 half day trips. Rained all day saturday but had some action. Not nearly as good as it should be. Thought the rain might get them moving in. Landed a 12 # and lost at least a 17#. Damn mackeral are a nuisance.Only a couple of us out of 15 boats at Kirby hooking anything. Hope this is not an indication of what the derby will look like. Very spotty .Fish were marking but not much of a bite happened at high or low tides. Perhaps water too warm and they are holding outside for awhile.

lots of pilchards out on the banks right now likely a good reason there aren't many salmon inside. 10 mile was thick with large coho yesterday...only found 1 hatchery...released many 8 - 10 lbers and one that was pushing 15. A few springs largest 18 lbs. Lost one screamer.

We looked at their stomach contents and they were feeding on pilchards at Kirby as well. Who knows , its a wait and see.

Our fish were either full of Pilchards or stuffed with needle fish. Feeding well, hopefully gonna break open soon.
