Hi there,

Thanks for any help in advance.

1. I used to see people fish off the george bridge when I was kid. What are they fishing for? If it's just bait, what do they use the bait to catch?

2. I find the maps somewhat confusing about what sections you are fishing it. From what I can gather around the victoria area is section 19? Does this include the inner harbor? Can you even fish off the docks in the inner harbor?

3. Can you fish off the docks under/near the bay street bridge? Is it even worth trying?

4. If I fish from shore like at the break water... is there a site listing the fish that you could catch and what can be eaten?

5. If I had a tow hitch on my truck I'd get a real boat but for now I'm working with a little zodiac wanna be thing with an electric motor in lakes. Is that enough for fishing off the shore in tital waters or do I need to invest in a real motor? Where do you think my boat might get me (other than the hospital?)

I've started fishing in July and I've found a lot of information on fishing but nothing really specific or related to Victoria until I found this site. Can you link to any other good sites I can look into? Any help is a huge help to someone as new as I am.

1) Herring . usually end of feb/march used for salmon/halibut
2) area 19 is correct, you won't catch much more than a bullhead
off the docks
3) no point until the herring run in the early spring
4) tidal regs will have that information, get a copy from
your tackle store
5) No, electric motor on a small inflatable is not suitable
keep it on the lake where it belongs

6) http://www.sportfishingbc.com
lot's of good info and the odd good squabble !! :o

Good luck !

Dark Star has filled you in on most things - just be sure to check the regs to find out what is legal or not when fishing off the breakwall, mostly rock and ling cod but occasionally you can get some salmon there.

The electric motor isn't suitable for saltwater but you could put a little gas engine on the boat and fish the harbour area. Lots of guys in kayaks and little boats fish that area, you just have to watch as all the boat traffic can be pretty dangerous and throw off some big wake. I've taken waves over the bow of my 25 footer, so a small boat could be in a serious trouble if they don't watch.

Some of the best fishing in the harbour can be right behind the breakwall and across to the green can, so you don't have to go far to catch fish.

Thanks for the info. I picked up my tidal license today and tacked on the salmon stamp just in case I catch one I can keep it. :D No clue what I'm doing yet, but I'll have some fun.

Would you say the break water is the best place to get started?

What's the green can you are talking about?

What type of lure/bait would you recommend would get me some action right away from the shore?

Try a herring/anchovie in a teaser head trolled 5' behind a flasher...
i take it you don't have down riggers but that might be ok
if you use a slip weight . you won't be down very deep but sometimes 20-30'
in the early morning is all you need.

lots of people fish off the rocks for salmon at Beechy Head in Sooke...not sure if they catch many, but some must or they wouldn't keep trying. Talk to the guys in Island Outfitters.
