these small coho can be very agressive fish, not so huge but fun on light gear and the best to eat i think.the flesh tends to be almost as dark as sockeye and very firm.To target these fish cruise the tidelines at a good troll speed and you can't miss.they tend to be in the top 100 feet and many are close to surface ,look for herring balls and bird activity.they are active feeders especially at slack water. They do not like hard running tides because of there relatively small stature.troll with the tide whenever possible for they almost never turn to feed.try the tidelines far out west, remember hatchery only, there are a lot of them and salmonslayer does especially well with these guys and especially their northern cousins who will show up late september through november, read northern coho;s for further tips and tactics and last years reports.SS out happy fishing.

i should go on about what to use.coho,s like red, they like alot of action and spoons work well.i use bait in a set up that does not miss and they do not take too deep for this will tend to happen with unproperly rigged bait.herring in sooke is the king of baits, especially if you can catch your own local stuff, like scooping a ball. last year i got 30 pounds in one scoop of my dip net.this is for bait so i don't want to hear about legalities please.try not to net coho for they are particularily sensitive to net rash and scale loss.release all wild coho or you will be heavily fined.release them gently,i suggest you do not bring wilds in the boat to thrash around.if deep hooked just cut the leader and lose the hook to save a coho please.these fish are unique and must be treated as such.,fast troll fast fish.SS out

Just wonder why you would bother to target 2-3 lb coho ? :o
seems to me you would be better to let them survive and target
them in Sept/Oct when they're decent size...

I'm curious on the size, this time last year I was hitting them up to 10lbs off shore of church rock.

Nobody said these fish were 2 to 3 pounds!
The same could be said for all the fisher-people that target 4 or 5 pound sockeye in the Albernie canal.

blueback is the general term for immature coho lurewasher..
check it out !

"Coho begin their saltwater life in April to July as 12 -14 inch grilse of legal size (30 cm). They move northward along the coast then return to take up residence in inland waters as one- to three-pound bluebacks "

coho of any size are a lively sporting fish and i do concentrate on big northerns in the fall if you would bother to read northern coho's before commenting negatively.i am not into retaining a boat load of hatchery immature coho'by any means. When there are few big springs around what else can you have a ton of fun with, pinks maybe but they don't scrap.i have had a 4lb coho put up twice the fight of an 8lb pink.SS out
