Since I switched to Power Pro braid I have wondered about the accuracy of the counters on my Scotties. I have watched with interest the various opinions and experiences of others. I finally decided to try to determine the accuracy myself. I peeled out 200 feet indicated and then taped it. It was accurate to within 6 inches. When I repeated the process, I got the same result. Did the same with the other rigger, and had virtually identical results. My conclusion was that the if the counters were accurate with the s/s line they will still be accurate with the braid. IMHO this also indicates that backing is not a necessity. If nothing else, I will be more confident about the depth of my gear in future.

Good to hear. I have been wanting to do the same thing, but haven't got around to it. What size PowerPro line were you using? I have the 150lb test. Great for reducing drag but I am consideriing going up to 2oo lb for durability.

Good to know . How much line do you have on your rigger? I have 400ft of 200lb power pro on mine.

I am using 450 feet of 200# power pro, and would never consider going back to s/s line. Less drag, no fraying problems, thus less damage to the riggers. The only issue I have had is stops and clips sliding. I have recently changed the terminal set-up after Looking at Von Brendel's rig. I use a brass torpedo swivel (line stop in front) attached to 8 feet of tuna cord. I removed the snubbers but left the gangen on the balls. This allows me to easily use a dummy, up 30 inches to a plug, then another release clip at 8 feet with flasher and spoon/hootchy. The clips don't slip on the tuna cord! No sliding and tangles...

You don't need backing if you use 450' of braided line. I did the same test by going into 200' of water and lowering the ball to the bottom. With 300' of braided line on the rigger my counter was out 10'.
