Does anyone have some good websites for looking into buying a boat from the USA. I am looking for a 20-22 foot used boat that is trailerable.

boats.com is where I found my grady years back. But there are some screaming deals on craigslist.org if you are willing to hunt around.

Jaxed turns up a lot of boats, just select manufacturer and area (or leave for all areas). http://boat.jaxed.comUnfortunately they don't include Craigslist anymore.

Bought mine through Craig's list in Santa barbra, Ca. Spent a lot of time going through Yacht world and the other sites, but this one was just too good of a deal. You can find lots of boats that are good prices. The trick is to find one that was loved and well maintained, not neglected. Nothing destroys a boat like neglect.

After hunting all spring, I bought one this summer from Santa Barbara, CA. google "craigspal" and download the program, it lets you look at every craigslist site in the world, or you can limit it by state, etc etc. It is a very small, non invasive program that works well. I was looking for a 2003 Bayliner 2452. Another site is yakaz.com and another is oodle.com. Good luck

Can someone please tell me what you pay at the border if you have purchased a used American boat?
Do you pay tax on the boat, motor and trailer or just the trailer?
Also, for insurance purposes, transporting the boat and trailer within the USA and bringing it up to the Canadian border, do you purchase Canadian or USA insurance?
What documentation should you have prepared ahead of time before arriving at the Canadian border/
Any insights would be appreciated.

At the border you pay HST on the boat and motor, bill of sale required.
Trailer is considered a vehicle therefore you need the title and will have to pay the inspection fee at border. Trailer will have to be inspected for compliance with canadian standards and must have a 16 digit VIN # and sticker with the gross weight etc on it. Make sure there is the 16 digit VIN, lots of problems if not. Upon inspection you can take paperwork to ICBC to register and pay the tax on trailer.
From ICBC you can buy a folder of insurance for the trailer that will enable you to transport the trailer home legally, only if it has a plate from the state it is registered in. Some transport without a plate but risk it. Option is temorary operation permit thru each state you travel thru.
I bought my boat insurance in BC before going down. Good luck
