ANGLERS and PUBLIC GATHER
TO DISCUSS CRISIS IN SPORT HALIBUT FISHERY
Maple Ridge – The BC Sport Fishing Coalition will be holding a town hall meeting on Monday, February 21st. to discuss the growing crisis in the recreational halibut fishery. Recent management decisions by Fisheries and Oceans Canada suggest that the 2011 recreational halibut fishery will operate under reduced bag and possession limits and close as early as mid-July. The group will hold an open meeting at Meadow Gardens Golf Club starting at 7pm to discuss the future of the recreational halibut fishery and its potential impact on B.C.’s $650 million tidal sport fishing industry.
“While every sport fishing enthusiast will support closures that conserve fish stocks, these measures are simply designed to protect the financial interests of Canada’s 436 commercial halibut quota holders” said Rob Alcock, BCSFC committee member.
“I urge everyone who has an interest in sport fishing to attend, get informed and get involved, because the future of the fishery they love is at stake,” Alcock added. “This crisis will spread to all Fraser River fisheries if we don’t stand up for our rights now.”
The BC Sport Fishing Coalition is a grass roots movement that has grown to well over 50,000 members in less than eight weeks. Ted Brookman, Region 1 president of the BC Wildlife Federation says the BCWF has joined the Coalition and expect the number of supporters will exceed 250,000 by the time the next federal election is called.
