I have been informed by DFO that stealing crabs / prawns from traps or stealing the traps, is an RCMP matter. They encourage us to report any violations so they are on file and the police will react if there are enough complaints.

I am not one to condone violence but I always have a camera and a cell phone with me and I'd be willing to bet my gas tank is bigger than a little tin boats. I will simply follow them, take pictures and make a phone call to the RCMP.

Not sure the RCMP would do much but I'd do what I could to make the little (or big) buggers life unpleasant (within the confines of the law of course ;) )

Thanks for looking into this Hot Rods. I'll call RCMP instead if it happens again. I usually have a camera on board as well.

Thanks for clarifying whose role it was. I assumed it would be the R.C.s, but you know how both like to pass the buck. :o

i can't believe that you have such a problem up there with poachers and thieves, this kind of behavior is outrageous.any body that steals fishing gear should be used as crab bait in my opinion.doesn't happen too much around Sooke basin but i have had my trap picked. I think it is probably due to the fact that the area is web cammed.maybe you guys should think about installing a few web cams in your area if it is becoming a problem.I know there have been some thefts of electric downriggers at pedder bay marina in Metchosin.I can't believe someone could have the pluck to steal off of a boat in a private marina.salmon slayer out..........
