Well it's that time of year again fella's.
I have seen a couple of reports of the prawning being good. I'm going to head out one evening this week before my moose hunt to see what's there. The crabbing has been good all summer from the reports I have read.
Let's start posting crab and prawning experiences. I'll be posting reports as much as I can.

I would like to start crabbing off nanaimo area, and am wondering about depths. I understood , it was in water of up to 100 ft. So right now, as I have run the gauntlet of commercial crabbers off roberts bank, I see on chart, they are all dropping pots in very deep water , right out into the traffic seperation zone.
And it is a minefield right now for several miles

Hey Seadog. In Departure Bay it varies. I have dropped them as shallow as 35 feet and as deep as 120' out in the middle of the bay with some success at both depths. At the Nanaimo Estuary/ Harbour it varies as well from about 45' to 150'. Good to have a few different lengths of rope on hand.
There is definately less traffic over here compared to Roberts Bank.

in the Sooke basin i set my traps in 25 -30 feet of water for crab and it varies according to your location but you can get crab and prawn at pretty much any depth not so critical.bait that you use is the trick i use salmon heads but any dead meat is good.used to use chicken or whatever the smellier the better.Am going to put my shrimp traps out soon though.

Good reports ss. This is why I started this thread to get folks to share there crabbing and prawning experiences. I don't mean for folks to give out GPS co-ords or anything like that just more the fun of it. I really enjoy it myself and them little buggers are tasty to boot . Might head out tomorrow afternoon as I am officially out of prawns from last year.

get a lot of small females sometimes loaded and only a few big male keepers, probably because of all the pressure on them seeing as you can only keep males and there are alot of commercial in the basin, i try different spots away from the commercial pickets. This sometimes works.Try outside the harbour.Ss
