We have a grandson who may be visiting us and I`m wondering if it is still legal to
fish for crab from the Nanaimo dock.

He had his first thrill with a drop trap, off the dock in Tofino, and loved it.

Any wisdom on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cheers Lurewasher,

The crab/fishing dock is used daily by many and, as long as you are following the fishing regs, you should be good to go. Every day legal crabs are caught there and it is a LOT of fun to watch the looks of youngsters as their trap appears with prehistoric looking bottom dwellers.

Thanks F.G. We might even get a crab dinner out of this.
Thanks again,

Cheers Lure-Washer,

Let me know which day you plan on going out. If I have a charter near then I would love to bring in some big dungeness and we can sneak them in the trap when he isn't looking! The surprised look on his (and the other fishermen) would be well worth the effort. :D

Thanks very much F.G. but the trap which he has, is one of those that lay flat and open on the bottom, with the bait in the center, and when you are sure that you have the mother load, you pull the rope and the trap closes with your prize catch. Or not! There is a lot of up and down, but that`s part of the game.
If you want to stop by though you can sneak some into my cooler.
Thanks again,
Lure-washer

Cheers Lurewasher,

I could certainly stop by and put some in your cooler or, better yet, I could 'loan' you a different trap for the day (you are legally able to fish two) and you may be surprised to find what's in your trap when you pull it.

Keep it in mind as I am enjoying the idea of the little guy's fishing surprise! Only down side is he is going to expect to catch 8 keepers every time he is out! Do you want to go there? ;)

Hi F.G.
My grandson isn`t such a little guy, actually he`s 15, and about 6ft. from Alberta, but still in awe about all the things that can be hauled in from the sea.
My crab traps are resting on the bottom near Denman Island, due to rotting ropes, so I`ll be getting some new ones, c/w the proper ropes.
Thanks very much for all your offers.
