Yes, good post Charlie. I have seen the Salmon University link, but not the Pro-Cure site. That is a very detailed step-by-step.

Here's a visual from Youtube.

Hah, you got me charlie!
Not going to lie, i don't know how to rig a cut plug herring.
Old fashioned wasn't the right term..
I mean around where i fish you just don't see many people, if any using this method!
To me it's a sort of older method, i've been brought up using anchovy specials and herring strip!
All i've ever heard about cut plug herring is that it was a lot more commonly used back 40 or 50 years ago, sure its still around today, i know it's still used up north, but not so much down here around victoria!

Basically to me it's an older, but still effective way to catch those tyee's!

When fishing up around Dundas, Prince Rupert, that's all we ever use. Very effective for the large Springs, in the last ten years in think we've only used a hoochie maybe twice.

the reason for using teaser heads and flashers ver.cut plug is simply all the work to rig it up,the more your gear is in the water the more success you will have, thats my opinion.big herring costs more and you get less in a pack.as for the big ones thats anyones guess.Ss

When I'm targeting springs I usually fish a cutplug off the center rod with nothing but a banana weight. The anchovies off the downriggers definitely produce more fish, but consistently smaller than the cut plug.
Oak Bay to Renfrew will yield best results with a cut plug later in the season (aug-early sept.) although flasher and anchovy outcatches salmon 10-1.

There's a new product that came out down here this year called Brad's Super Bait Cut Plug. I've never used one but recently bought a few colors after reading and hearing how well they worked in the Columbia River fishery, off the Washington/Oregon coast and here in Puget Sound on the recent Coho. I plan on first trying them out for winter feeders. I've seen a video of their action and they look pretty good in the water. They're hinged and you can open them up and stuff them with cut up bait, scent, ect. which sounds intersting. They've been very difficult to find in the tackle stores because they have been flying off the shelves almost as soon as they come in. I'm a sucker for tackle so we'll see if they work or not. I'm thinking I'll run them a few feet back of a dummy flasher.

cut plugs are just too much hassle for me to use, teaser heads are my thing ,you can get just about any action you want when you use a 6 inch herring in a teaser and they work for almost all species,so whats the point. Cutplugs are good if you have a row boat or a seagull outboard,or something old school like that. The modern gear is just better. The new bullet rotators are supposed to be great but i havn't seen any at the stores.you can get them online, somewhere.Do you want to fish or cut bait.just real slow and labour intensive, but i am sure there are many who would argue the point. They still do it with success in the Charlottes, but who could not have success in the Queen Charlotte Islands, good fishing up there but not much else.Ss out........

I'm assuming you were speaking of my comment of trying the new Brad's cut plug lures for Blackmouth. These "cut plug's are only about 4" long and I fish 4" Coyotes and other 4" spoons a lot in the winter. Quite often I'll run a 602 5" Tomic right off the bottom with good success. I really don't see why these wouldn't work too but they may not. If they don't they won't get much dragging time. I'd be interested in your thoughts why you think they wouldn't work. Thanks
