I am not sure I would be trying any "cutplugs" for winter blackmouth??? That is someting I need to think on???

I'm assuming you were speaking of my comment of trying the new Brad's cut plug lures for Blackmouth. These "cut plug's are only about 4" long and I fish 4" Coyotes and other 4" spoons a lot in the winter. Quite often I'll run a 602 5" Tomic right off the bottom with good success. I really don't see why these wouldn't work too but they may not. If they don't they won't get much dragging time. I'd be interested in your thoughts why you think they wouldn't work. Thanks

Yep, and I agree with everything you just said! :) :)
It is something I need to "think on"?
I would love to hear your report! :o

Look on page 2 of this topic. I posted some links that have some photos. As for where to get them I doubt anyone in Canada has them yet. They are new this year from a company in Longview Washington and kind of hard to find because they sell out quickly. The supply of the new product isn't meeting the demand. Earlier this week I know that the following places had some. Ted's Sport Center, Lynnwood WA. Three Rivers Marine, Woodinville WA and Wholesale Sports, Federal Way WA. I'm pretty sure that Ted's and Three Rivers will ship. Not sure about Wholesale. Hope this helps.

thanks fo the links, those rigs look like the stuff to get but where can we get them from.I have used something similar that i made from a baitrix that i cut up and tried, worked o.k,but still didn't outfish bait, thats what i am after,i keep experimenting and the only thing that i have come up with is a gulp fake fish, dressed with a hootchie, with a homemade scenthead and works excellent for coho, probably because of all the action that is created by it,most of my homemade stuff works great.i experiment alot.Ss out....

After visiting this site numerous times, I'll say that I am always impressed by the shared passion that my neighbors to the north have for salmon fishing.

Though I love to spin a chovy, and it is my first choice, I will say that certain conditions occasionly give an advantage to being able to fish cut plug.

This last September, we took our second trip to Renfrew (9/3-9/5). Though fishing had cooled somewhat since our earlier August trip, we spent the first few hours at Camper using chovies. The odd spring was being caught amongst the 20-30 boats. The water was clear and glassy and we made the call to switch to 8 ounces and a cut plug. We put 3 in the boat 22-29 lbs. Next day, we started with cut plugs and had 3 mid twenties in the boat by 9. Decided to run to Nit Nat, where we released a mid teen and lost one. Back at Camper by 3, put another mid twenties in the boat. As we were running low on blue sized herring, finished the day picking up a high teener at East Point on a chovy. Next morning, we had two on (lost both) with 4 ounces and cut plug. All in all, we felt pretty good about the numbers hooked by our boat versus the others.

My conclusions:
1. Clear water is a bit of a must, if there's an algae bloom and turbidity, your odds go down (as your bait is essentially your flasher).
2. Fish have to be looking up and running shallow, which is more prevalent in a "shallower" spot, such as Camper or Nit Nat. 50 feet of water or less is better.
3. Have to try and match the bait size of what they're feeding on.

Though we catch the majority of our fish on a downrigger, there have been days that switching over to another tactic has saved us while the fleet continues to pound out an occasional fish.

Just my $.02
