Everyone has told me to go early for big butts. I have a trip planned to Ucluelet Aug. 1 - Aug. 11 2011, hope to get some chickens then. I am starting to plan a shorter 3 day trip especially for bigger Butts. Can anyone help with timing and locations so i might be able to at least get out 1 of the three days. Have no idea where to go early , or what to use, troll or jig. Have all the gear for both including fat squids to spreader bars and all plugs/spoons. Any help or ideas would be great as this will be my first time early.

Cheers,

I have a couple of halibut charters to take out of Ucluelet starting in May. The bigger butts are closer in so venturing too far offshore is not necessary. I will be jigging a few of my holes and, only if that proves to be unsuccessful, will I switch to trolling them up. Too early and the weather is still ugly and too late and the bigger fish have slipped a bit deeper. Also, at this time there are already springs in the area and a guy can combine butts with springs (usually too early for coho).

Any of the equipment you mentioned will bring them up but I will be jigging herring on a spreader bar before switching over to glow squids when trolling.

Hope this helps.

Do the big butts head into barkely sound this time of year? Im thinking of heading there early this year, but dont have a big boat (18.5 feet) and will probably be staying from the surfline to about 5 miles. Had some success in the sound in July, but nothing big.

Why do you want to catch big butts? It's a good idea to leave them be if you want to fish halibut in the future. Not trying to stir the pot but people have to get over the idea of killing barn doors, the meat is crappy and they are the breeders. If your idea of big butts is 30-70 pounds then its no big deal but in this day and age fishermen (especially guides) should be turning away from killing 100+ pounders.

Cheers All,

I consider a big butt to be 50-100 lbs and encourage my guests to release those over 100 lbs however, if my guests wishes to keep a big fish then they are perfectly within their right and I don't make an issue over it.

As for lings I leave the big ones and the small ones alone! lol Rather catch salmon/halibut! :D
