I am planning a family vaction to the Island early next August. My 2 boys are 10yr and 8yr and wife. The boys are avid little fisherman and are looking forward to catching halibut, samon, crab and prawns. Is one side of the island better for this mixed bag? Rough seas on the west is a possible negative, but great beaches and beachcombing would also be fun. Port Hardy looks a bit more protected but not sure about beaches, crab and prawn. Thanks in advance for help in pointing us in the right direction.

Westside is much better but big water and lots of the time the fish are generally offshore. The eastside is spotty and you wont catch halis. Port hardy is not really that protected nor on the eastside but has good fishing. What rig are you running?

Telegraph cove is a nice balance as its pretty protected and there are halis inshore not to mention unreal scenery/wildlife. The downside is spotty salmon fishing at times. Pinks will be coming through then though and in early august springs should be around in numbers.

Kelly, thanks for your reply. I will be charter fishing and will look into Telegraph Cove area. Can crabs, prawns and beaches be found around there. So is Port Hardy considered "north" rather than "east"? Why no halis there, but in Telegraph Cove? Any good charters to recommend? Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks for your help.

Ok that makes things a bit different. Hardy is considered north and definatly has hali. East is generally campbell river to victoria and there are not many halibut in this area not to mention poor salmon fishing. Hardy will have great fishing at that time for salmon/hali. Its a bit more protected than offshore on the westside. Dont know many of the guides up there but serengeti runs a great outfit.

If you are doing a charter that makes things a bit easier. The westside at that time will be on fire offshore. You will be running 5-25 miles out in generally 1-2m swell. Its pretty comfortable and the guides all know what they are doing. Should be a wack of salmon and good #s of hali. Plenty of great charter operators out of bamfield and ucluelet. Heres a few.

x2 Highroller Charters.

If its rough for offshore fishing there is calm water in Barkley sound. That would be my number 1 choice by far.

Definitely Ucluelet and most definitely High Roller Charters (speaking from experience).
