it was a crankbait called a fat free shad, pattern crawdad, but it doesnt look much like a crayfish. I was trolling at about 1.7mph and it was hitting weeds at around 20ft deep.

we saw fish at about 35ft deep on the sounder so i'm guessing thats where the bigger ones are right now

I saw a guy at the ramp one day rigged up with crank baits like that one day. He hooked a lot of fish that day.

yeah I got it and another good lure from a guy who lives on prospect lake. That crankbait is great because it goes right through light weeds without snagging. you can tell right where the weeds are by trolling a little closer and closer to shore til you hit the weeds, then back out a bit and you will be running right above them, with no weights or downrigger in the way. I haven't caught any larger ones on that lure but lots and lots of smaller up to maybe 16." It's great for days when they are a bit deeper.

beautiful morning spent 3.5 hrs on the water and tried out my new Fenwick 7'6" Light rod and quantum smoke spinning reel. Had little luck most of the morning then at about 10am had a big hit on my old rod, was reeling it in when the new rod went off too! I put the first rod in the rod holder and grabbed the new rod as fast as i could since it only had a single barbless hook, landed a beauty 15" rainbow, released it and picked up the other rod which had long been slack. Sure enough its still there and after a nice fight land a really nice 18." Rod and reel performed great. Water was calm most of the morning even though BWD said it would be 15kmh. Caught larger fish on perch floating rapala. smaller but still very nice fish caught on rainbow floating rapala rigged with a single barbless hook.

Managed to get out for the first time in a while on Elk yesterday. Got three hits on a black with grey scale flatfish, got one nice 15" rainbow to the boat and saw that it had swallowed some shore fisherman's gear. I cut the swivel snap off the front and gently pulled the hook and line out the backside. Judging by the energy with which the fish swam away, I think it will be fine. After that nice bit of fish karma, I was rewarded with a battle with the biggest fish I have had on the line at Elk lake, it must have been over 20" and pushing 4 lbs. after a fun but brief fight that saw the fish jump clear out of the water three times, it got close and spat the hook on the final jump. what a beautiful fish. great couple of hours in the morning :D

File comment: this was hanging out both ends of the poor guy. amazing that a hook can pass through their system, but I have seen this at least three times on Elk.

I was told this week that Elk Lake was closed due to an algea bloom bad enough to kill pets and make adults really sick.

Any truth to this as tall? My source isn't always accurate on details and like shock value statements.

Thanks for any feedback on this!
