In the past to facilitate quick changes I have tied my hootchies using a barrel swivel to connect to the clip on the flasher and have done reasonably well. I am now wondering if I might do even better tying directly to the clip. I am thinking I may get better action on the hootchie by doing this. Come to think of it the same goes for spoons. Can anyone offer some advice?
Thanks

I don't think that tying it directly will catch you more fish. In fact may even slow you down, takes more time to measure and retye....BB

I never use swivels with either hootchies or spoons, but just tie a loop in the leader, and hook it on the flasher snap.
Maybe this isn`t the best approach. I catch some fish but would always be interested in more.

I cut the clips off my flashers for this reason. I tie the leader directly to the flasher swivel. It gives the hootchie more whip which i think increases the catch. It is annoying not being able to clip the leader on but if it catches more...

The loop works fine for me too...... for spoons I use a swivel

Thanks to all for the tips. I will definitely try the "loop" method and tying direct to flasher no clip this spring. I'm always looking to try something new.

I don't use swivels with hootchies as it is less able to transfer the motion of the flasher to the hootchie since hootchies have no inherent motion of their own. I use a no swivel snap and leaders of 40-60 lb. test to connect up my hootchies. Learned this from an old commercial guy. The action they give in the water is great.

Whole in the water, are you saying that you remove the swivel that comes with the flasher?

Often wondered about that.

If you rig the hoochy like a commercial :- Siwash hook with a swivel (inside the hoochy)....then, because you have no swivel up near the flasher, the turning of the flasher will impart a rotation on the leader which carries right down to the hoochy. Because you have swivel inside the hoochy, some of the leader rotation will be absorbed by that swivel. If it doesn't then the hook is turning too which is kicking up the legs/fronds of your hoochy into a continual twist, which may attract fish or it may not.

If you rig the hoochy sport-like (one hook up, one down with no swivel inside the hoochy) and you have no swivel at the other end either, then the flasher rotates and the hoochy follows the rotation as well because of the leader.

This twist could get transferred through the hoochy which is rigged one up, one down with no swivel........and , again, start kicking up hoochy leg/fronds due to the spiral action of the leader.

This "twisting up and kicking up" of the hoochy legs as it rotates with no swivel at either end on a "one up ,one down" rigged hoochy may be fish enticer...or it may not.

if you want a narrower profile on your hoochy I would go with a swivel up by the flasher at least.

Try 'em both ways and see what works......Cheers.... 8-)
