Here's a cheap but good hali spear. Take an old hoe or shovel handle, leave the metal collar on and drill a 3/8 hole 3 to 5 inches. take 2 feet (Metal Mart Nanaimo $8.22 inc tax) of 316 SS rod, 3/8 diameter. Stuff some 5 minute epoxy in the drilled hole and pound the rod in solidly. Use a bit more epoxy to seal around the top. When dry, lightly taper the business end of the rod so it will not stick when you want to pull the spear tip away from the handle. Cost of arrowhead style spear tip approx $20.00 This setup is more robust than anything available in the stores, and less than a third of the cost.

Jencourt was wondering where you picked up the arrow head for $20 ? I've seen them for $35.
I also use a small rubber band as a 'safety' when I've got the harpoon loaded with it's tip on. I fasten it to the wire cable on the tip & to a small bead I attached to the handle. This makes sure the tip stays in place on the rod when I need it. When you make your strike the elastic breaks off easily.
