I miss Steelhead season already.... Good thing for the Summies coming up..... If you recognize the pics...... shut up... Thank you
Over the past few years I have found myself targeting the small westcoast flows that many over look. I don't expect to see anyone else except for people I know on a first name basis...... Sure the success rate is way lower than the Cow or Stamp but when the planets align and you put a bend in the rod, one fish can pay for many days/weeks/months of effort.
Ma nature is trying to say "It's go time"
I got a call Thursday afternoon at work from the boss..."Kid is sick can you start early?" More often than not I have the duty of getting kids ready and off to school. Normally the answer would have been "Sorry buddy" But..... the planets aligned. After he asked I thought about it and remembered that it was a pro-d day.....(probably shocked him) but I said "Why yes I can" Going to work early means off early. I got off and busted home as fast as the Colwood crawl would allow, slipped into the waders (mach 5ish), let the dogs out to relieve, then sneak out the door in the rain with the Nog dog in tow. I knew at best I would have maybe an hour before it was time to strap on the head lamp and make my way out. It was kind of funny when I got to the flow and headed up the game trail along the banks. Me, following Tana who has never been there before. Maybe she was leading me to the steel? I did a few casts in Tana's chosen spot.... It took about 15 minutes for the float to dive. I gave a pull. It countered catching me totally off guard. Engaged the clicker and the rain had stopped, it was warm, at least I thought. I am pretty sure I heard the Islander say "Bitchin" and the 12'6" noodle was doing its best sideways U impression. Not long after a nice 10lb buck came to hand. I sat, lit a smoke, cracked a wobbly that I had stashed in the backpack, gave the dog a few pets and sat in the glory that all the time I have spent on this flow was not in vain. It was still light though. After the quick break I decided that the gooey bob has served well and I would switch up to the the ole pink worm. First cast and the float dives. I didn't feel it but that wasn't bottom. A couple casts later and the pin is singing again..... A much more spirited battle than the first with a good amount of air time. After some messing around and exchanging blows another buck came to hand this time in the 12lb range..... Yes... there was still a little light left. I managed a few more casts until I hung up, snapped off, then watched $7 worth of drennan float down stream into the failing light. Couldn't have wiped the grin off my face and put the stamp on it and called it a day.... (and of course no camera)
Saturday was a work day... but Sunday was a 6 o'clock wake up to VD knocking on the door. With great anticipation we headed out... We walked a lot, covered a lot of miles..... Fished a lot of water(2 systems) and the second was the same as the success on Friday... I had a couple of interesting float dives but nothing to write home about. Beats sitting at home. Was playing with the cam so heres a couple pics.....
