allocation of the entire spring salmon population for whale food, isnt this a brilliant idea.cut the throat of every coastal community in B.C.real smart ,oh,no whale watching either.I say cull the whale pop. for i see far too many whales and seals which are in direct competition with humans for food stocks.who comes first us or them.they will overpopulate and eat up all the fish after the spring s are gone, then die on the beaches of starvation in the hundreds, guaranteed, doesn,t take a doctorate to figure that out.can,t leave well enough alone, look at the disasters in the past when humans meddle with nature.an adult killer whale eats ,in season ,on average 600,not pounds or kilos,600 spring salmon each day.do the math.time to bring out the salmon torpedoes.

Salmon Slayer,
I think your numbers are off. The article I read said each whale eats 145lbs of salmon per day with up to 42 % more for a lactating female.

"look at the disasters in the past when humans meddle with nature."

In your post you unknowingly answered your own question - it is a very bad idea!!!

Well......before we wipe the slate clean of Killer whales.....

The focus so far has been on South Van Isle locals ( you know, those kinder gentler whales that only eat Fraser River Chinook).

Orcas frequent many parts of the globe, be they transients ,dwarfs or locals.
I have not heard that the species are in danger anywhere else......regardless of the fact that Chinook salmon are not found in abundance at each and every place on the planet that Orcas inhabit.

Therefore it seems that choice of food for Orcas varies from place to place, taking into account that they are found in oceans thousands of miles from here,
Antarctica being one place for example.

Much has been made of supposed declining certain fish species world-wide.
Orcas have not come up anywhere in this issue until now....so one would conclude they are doing well elsewhere.

It's too bad that our local southern Orcas have been painted as the finickiest of finicky when it comes to killer whales doing lunch.

But then again......don't forget you're in British Columbia, where I.Q.'s have nothing to do with who gets elected or put in authoritative positions.

lol, I'd love to see how this plan would go over - it would all be moot if those SVI whales would just eat seals.
