670 springs per whale per day? One every 2.15 SECONDS 24/7/365

Laughable!

Math is little off there Nog - there is 86,400 seconds in a day.

So its 1 chinook salmon every 129 seconds or roughly 1 chinook every 2 minutes - still laughable.

If you combine J,K & L pod(all found off SVI) we get around 80 whales eating a combined almost 60,000 chinook PER DAY!

Break that down to a full year and we're looking at almost 23 Million chinook and that doesn't take into account nursing whales.

If you follow the claim that the article makes that whales eat around 20% of the total available salmon that puts chinook salmon numbers around 100 Million fish in the SVI area over the course of a year.

Could this be a plant by the DFO and the " fish barons" to deflect any criticism about the 6000 tons of herring to be fished from a badly depleted stock or is this just my suspicious mind? Could it be that these whales and seals are eating more salmon to replace the basis of their historical protein intake - herring? Maybe this is just a result of the over fishing of this food supply - a prime example of the money today and to hell with tomorrow programs of all envolved.

Of course it's more "Eco-terror" to implement a later decision that we won't like......as usual.

They previously stated that the low birth rate amongst killer whales was due to the buildup of toxins in their systems which negatively affected their reproductive rate.

I can see it all now.........Cut down on the catch rate of Chinooks for all recreational fisherman to save the whales.
Then put the entire allocation of Chinook in the hands of commercials ,who we know out of conservation consideration would not even THINK of harvesting an extra Chinook.......

And then you'll be able to buy your limited allocation from the commercial sector...at an inflated price of course.....because,heck, we ARE talking conservation here.....

Oh..and by the way.......they had captive killer whales at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Were they feeding them 670 Chinooks a day?

I looked up that report, and it looks like the Times Colonist got it a little bit distorted.
They neglected to devide the number of salmon per day by the number of salmon,
to get the number each whale eats.
That brings the number down to a much more reasonable number.
They still eat a good number of salmon though.
