Time to start planning for the Sproat Lake Loggers Derby. March 6-7th, Barkley Sound. Weigh in station, Poett Nook. Lots of prizes and entries. Not sure what the entry fee will be this year, but was $15 per person last year.

Only 59 days to go. :D

Anybody do the logger derby last year? I heard it was slow, but previous years sounded like people did allright.

Last two years have been slow...this year may be better. I fished Bamfield on Boxing Day and we hooked 15 fish, all stuffed with needlefish and large herring. Most were small (around 3 lbs), but a couple months of feeding will change that.
Fingers crossed that they stick around.
Counting down the days...

ya I heard the same thing woodzy - could be an awesome winter/spring in barkley with the huge run of columbians that will be working their way down the cost soon though.

I talked to a friend up in Tofino today, one of the better known guides has been hitting high teen winters all week, so they may be working their way down.

We fished Sarita over New Years and got a 14 and 10lber. Actually the biggest for us. Normally we come in with the 5-8 lbers. Maybe this year will be different for us.

Correct comments about last year, not many fish and no biggies. Over the years it has varied from no fish to our limits, just depending upon if you hit the right spot and whether the killer whales have recently made a pass through. That usually shakes things up a bit.

The best part about the loggers derby is that if the fishing is slow the drinking is fast. You'll have a good time no matter what.

Can't wait.

Other than at Poett Nook, where can we get tickets and how much?

Gone Fishin in Nanaimo isn't selling them this year, maybe their Port Alberni store is. Anyone have any info?

That's disappointing to hear. I usually pick mine up at Gone Fishing in Nanaimo.
Wonder why? The Port Gone Fishing carried them as well. I would imagine Port Boat House would carry them as they were a major sponsor last year. The organizers have said in the past they rely on the earlier ticket sales to purchase the prizes and that while last minute entries are more than welcome, it is better to buy early. I think I'll contact the Moss Man from the Nook and see if he knows anything. Will report back.
