couple weeks away...
most people troll there with sockeye gear (small pink squirts and short leaders). The most popular flasher color seems to be red.
Never heard of a fish caught there on a spoon, but I'm sure there's been a few.
I've had success trolling herring behind a red flasher.
Watch for the schools on your fish finder and adjust your depth accordingly, but a good starting point is right on the bottom in 40 to 100' of water.

Me and my buddies will be there from 26th august -5th september. Look out for the ugly welded 13' tub with three guys in it having waaaay too much fun. :D I'd love to give you some tips, but this is the one fishing trip I have to keep quiet about. Let's just say we don't use what the regulars use, but we are very successful most years nonetheless. Here's a link to something that looks kinda like what we use: ;)

It must be good cuz its called the "Qualicum Killer" lol

Good luck and see you out there!

The last two years i have fished the river on august 10th and had my best days believe it or not. I agree its to early but if you look around and dont just fish the mouth you might find some schools.

Last year we caught 3 fish nearer the beach in as little as 16' of water! we were launching off the beach and i was looking off the bow for rocks, and I see a school of salmon swim by under the boat in 7', maybe 15 fish ranging from 10-25 lbs, we get the gear down, as soon as the flasher can dive down we got a nice fish. Maybe it had something to do with the big storm the night before, they were not in the usual spots that's for sure. we caught 1 on the way to the river, and trolled for 6 hours not a sniff at the river mouth. On the way back, caught 2 more nice fish, one right in front of our condo. Just goes to show that there are fish everywhere up there this time of year. Can't wait to get up there next friday.

I was just there about a half an hour ago. Went down to Kincaid Rd. to have a look and see how many guys were fishing the river for the F.C. Derby.

Figured there'd be tons of boats out there.

To my utter surprise it was all but deserted....you wouldn't even know there's a derby on.

About 6 boats out.....scattered all over the place...and about 4 boats out of French creek Marina.

I didn't see anybody playing anything.

Maybe more guys were out earlier in the morning, I don't know.

Yesterday the wife and I were fishing around Gerald Island until 7:30 p.m.

Only two boats jigging......other than that not a boat to be seen for hours.

I chalked it off to people working Friday etc. etc......

Now I'm starting to wonder......

( By the way......no salmon with our number on them aroundGerald.....
