Its an eye opener to see a wake coming right at your gear when your lake fishing. First time I caught them i was using a 4 ft super light action rod and a shimano 500 .

I'd like to dispel some rumours here.

The local lakes are stocked with Fraser Valley Rainbows. They are a domesticated stock termed "Fraser Valley" because they originally were developed at and came from the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, not the Fraser River!

The large fish released into Chemainus and Fuller are the Fraser Valley broodstock. They are 3 and 4 year old fish released after they were spawned in the hatchery. There were also some immature fish released, those would be the more silver fish. Some surplus captive steelhead brood were also released into Fuller Lake. They are not there to take care of the sunfish .

That would be a great thing to add. Something needs to wipe out those sunfish.

They are such a predatory fish, the poor trout fry have no chance against them.

My brother went back to Chemainus a couple of days ago and people were keeping the big ugly fish. My brother used a fly rod but nothing larger than 2lb. Still quite a fun battle on a flyrod though.

I guess I will have to get out there sooner than later, but with this cold weather of late, me thinks that they may have got more dorment for the time being.

Leichvost: The trout that are regularly stocked into Chemainus and Fuller lakes are catchables (200g/~9-10" and up). They are not fry. They are also sterile which means there is no natural recruitment ---- therefore no trout fry.

While the sunfish are non native to our watersheds and not good for them, they are not eating the trout, but eating the same things the trout eat.

Interesting. So is it true to say that the local lakes don't repopulate then? I once caught a sunfish about a pound in size and when checking its stomach there were small fish in it.

What would they be eating if not trout? These were all small fish - stickleback size but located in Quenell Lake.

Those were likely sticklebacks or juvenile sunfish or bass or perch.

Hit long lake yesterday for about 4 hours with 2 freinds. I hit over 20 ,my one buddy hit 12 and my other freind hit 3 or 4. Pretty much non stop action fishing off the bottom with power bait and small enough hooks to make sure they would float. My freind caught the biggest fish 17" but 99% of the fish were 10-13".

There is also a new dock installed on the lake.

Fished last week and hit about 40 fish or so all around a pound

Where did they put the dock on Fuller? Good to hear fishing is hot there too, might have to check it out while my boat is in the shop.
