I am thinking of treating my bro to a fancy downrigger reel. Which of these is better suited to west coast salmon fishing? They both look great, is the free spool a feature I would be missing? Thanks Alan

MR3 for me. Works well. Successfully landed many a fish. Large arbor so holds a ton of line and picks up line fast when the fish turn and run at you. I had considered the MR2 but the MR3 is a newer model so went with it. Love the large star type drag wheel. Easy to adjust while fighting a fish.

Have them both. Prefer the MR3.

Overall I prefer the MR3 over the MR2. However, there are two things I'd like to change on the MR3. 1) Have a free spool lever like on the MR2 so you don't always have to fiddle with the drag to release line.
2) Be able to turn the reel clicker off. I like the quiet and the clicker many times acts like a dinner bell to any nearby seals.
My 2 bits.

Try the new Trophy XL Tyee QR 4.5, half the price & no renewing bearings every year if you do a lot of fishing
