Just got a Shimano Talica 8II for my July 29 through Aug. 12 2011 trip to Ucluelet trip. Using my boat as last year did real good trolling for Salmon/ Hali's. Thanks to everyone for all the help, I must return every year now, Ucluelet and fishing the banks is a wonderful place, thanks again. I am seeking opinions about which real is the best for trolling and jigging not only for salmon and halibut but the wonderful bottom fishing we experienced. I used Quantum wide spool Cabo's and the salt water seemed to cause some problems.

In my opinion trolling and jigging require 2 different types of reels. I prefer a singe action reel for trolling (e.g. Shimano GT 2000 Moocher Plus or if you have the $ an Islander MR-3). For jigging you can use either a spinning reel or a level wind. I would go with a level wind becasue if you get a bigger size one (e.g. Penn GT330 or even better a Shimano TLD 20) you can use it for halibut fishing. My 2 bits.

Simple solution to your equipment problems... EVERY TIME you use your gear in salt water, RINSE with fresh water AND back the drag off. I have a spray bottle of fresh water on board so I can rinse gear and tackle as I go. I have been using the same 2000GTs for a few seasons now and only 1 has gone in for service and it was because the lever let go when I was pulling the rod out of a 'striker' rod holder (big nasty rats nest and pooched the drag). I now tape the lever down. If you are looking for a rod/reel combo that will double duty look at a Talora TLA 90M-2 and a Ambassador 7000 or a Shimano TLD level wind. If you need help setting up your d/riggers or other gear let me know.
