Just in the process of moving to PA, have not done much steelheading in the last few years but several years ago spent many hours on the Chilcotin River and the odd trip to the Yakun. Minimal flyfishing experience, mostly float fishing but wanting to try some more flyfishing. Is there a club or ? that I might try to get with to meet people that might want a tag along. Have contemplated hiring Nic Hnennyj to at least get familiar with the river. I am a catch and release kind of guy, retired and available most anytime. Hugh

Welcome to Port Hugh!
As The Missile noted, Kenny and Nick are both well experienced and WILL show you both a Good time, and a fair bit of the How-to's and Where-to's. Great idea to ride with them to get to know the river and what she offers!

I'm still damn busy chasing horns and hooves, but that season ends on the 10th. I will then switch to steel for the next couple of months. Semi-retired myself these days, so have a LOT of time to get out and about. Don't often take the fly rod though, centerpin mostly. We should hook up for a day of wandering once I switch hats...

Cheers & again, WELCOME!
Matt

You do not want to fish with that Ironoggin kid :D

Take his advise with a grain of salt too ;)

And there isn't really many fishing opportunities there either.... especially for steelhead.

[insert copious amounts of sarcasm above]

Fishaholic............. jealous.

Hi Hugh & welcome!!

Definitely a great place to start.....Nick is a good buddy of mine & will put you on the fish. You can check out some of his pics from this week in the Steelhead thread. He is fishing the upper river right now for mostly summer runs & the odd very nice chrome winter run that are just starting to come in. The best fly fishing time has pretty much passed......mid September to mid November when the salmon are spawning is by far the best time to get 'em with the fly rod.....tons of eggs are floating down the river & the steelhead are just feasting on them. Pretty much ANY egg fly pattern or even just a single rubber egg on top of the hook will work great with the fly rod. Cool thing is, you can see a lot of the fish you are targeting & there is nothing better than seeing a nice steelie cruise over & just hammer your presentation. There is about a 7-10 day window before the winter runs start coming into the lower river in better numbers. It varies from year to year, but usually between December 10-15 is when you can start finding decent numbers of fresh sea licers starting to move up. I've already got Friday the 17th all booked & ready to go.....just hope this surgically repaired knee of mine will be ready to go by then. 8-) If you need any more info please feel free to PM me & I'll help ya any way I can. SS
