Nicaragua? What in the world are you going there for?
Be careful where you travel - last time I got "shot at" was in that area! But that was in the late 80's!

If you really want some good Bass fishing and get a chance Lake Yojoa in northwestern Honduras. Also known as Lago de Yojoa.

Went down there with a buddy surfing. Travelled to the whole country and had a blast. Locals are a bit stand-offish at first but if you speak spanish they warm up pretty quickly. Not if, but when you get pulled over for a boloney traffic stop, they are looking for a quick bribe. $20 should do the trick. Have fun.

Ah yes, I am very familiar with driving in central america and what comes with that(ie. bribes). Thanks for letting me know the going rate, much cheaper then in Costa Rica ;)

I plan to try and sneak in a couple of days of surfing but the bulk of our trip will be on the corn islands in the Caribbean. Lucky for there are tons of bone fish off the islands, I just need to find something to keep the gf busy while I fish 8-)

And Charlie, things have changed A LOT in central America since the 80's, that was 30 years ago!

Yep, you have to remind me, I am getting old? :D

In the late 80's we didn't have any tourist!
Not saying don't go... Just be careful - people tend to forget - it is a 3rd world country!

Police coverage is extremely sparse outside of major urban areas, particularly in Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast autonomous regions. Lack of adequate police coverage has resulted in these areas being used by drug traffickers and other criminal elements. Street crime and petty theft are a common problem in Puerto Cabezas, Bluefields and the Corn Islands along the Atlantic coast. For security reasons, the Embassy has limited travel by its staff to the North and South Atlantic Autonomous Regions (RAAN and RAAS), including the Corn Islands. Given the area’s geographical isolation, the Embassy’s ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens who choose to travel in the Caribbean costal area is constrained. Police presence on Little Corn Island is made up of volunteers with little to no formal training, and is minimal on Corn Island and other remote areas.

In late 2007, a U.S. citizen was assaulted and violently raped while on vacation in Little Corn Island. U.S. citizens have previously been the victims of sexual assault on this island and other beaches in the country. The Embassy recommends traveling in groups when in isolated areas. Single travelers should exercise special caution while traveling in the Corn Islands and other remote areas of the country.

Just got back, what a great trip and country. There was a minor bombing in the capital city Managua a few days before I had to fly out, but not a big deal. Also one demonstration that got a little dicey in Granada but nothing to do with tourists.

I didn't get to do too much fishing, but got a few good sized jacks, some tuna, barracuda and spanish mackerel. Typical third world fishing though, they got gear that can handle a marlin to real in 10lb fish, its all about getting the meat in the boat.

But the rum, surfing, beaches, volcanos, jungle, islands etc. was great and often times we were the only tourists around - we had a blast.

That's why I always take my own gear.
