Lucky me - my husband is taking me up to Nootka Sound to fish the end of July and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if prawn fishing will be okay at that time? If so, any hints on where to put traps? We're familiar with the Barkley Sound area but not Nootka.

Are there fishing opportunities inside at that time of year too? Don't mind going outside at all but love the scenery inside.

BTW - your fishing grounds are amazing and everyone we've met up there has been just fantastic! Thanks for your hospitality. If you come down fish in the NW I hope we are as welcoming.

Don't let 'Steelhead' get to you! All Canucks, aren't arrogant, at least no more than Yanks! :D

You will probably do just fine the last week of July on the “inside”, especially from Hoiss Point and along the ‘Wall”, but be warned it will be crowded! That is very much based on the Conuma return and those are headed for the Conuma hatchery at the end of the inlet! If you hit that – that can be massive. If you miss or it is too crowded, just think 4 nm SW the red can at Bajo Reef! Those are more likely Columbia fish out there. If you do go out to the Highway, would you do me favor and make sure none of those Canucks up there are poaching those U.S. fish – I would like some to catch a little farther south you know! LOL

Sorry couldn’t resist, but seriously, I don’t mind the freezers, but, limits are limits… and poaching is poaching. I am also starting to see more and more fish being filet, cut up, and stuck in one gallon ‘freezer bags’, prior to being put into that freezers - that would not good either! Plus, they are starting to check those freezers more, especially at the ferries! And, you will not only lose the fish, but you will also get a healthy fine - last I heard (never got on) but, it was about $100 per fish? They can also take your equipment and it makes no difference if you are a Yank or Canuck!

Prawns, you will see the pots! The very east end of the ‘Wall’ down to and around ‘Camel Rock’. Then directly across from ‘Camel Rock’ on the northeast side of ‘Bligh Island’. All have produced for me in the past. As noted at least 180 feet, down to around that 300 feet. Mixing cat food and salmon cuts, seems to be the thing that works best - for me?

Have a nice trip… I love that area! :)

Headed out to Nootka end of July (out of gold river), thoughts on where to tie up overnight? 21.5' will be sleeping in the cuddy. Also looking for spots for Hali and springs. it's our first trip to nootka and some local knowledge might save us some running around. thanks Doug

Are you looking for places to 'tie' up, or anchor out?

Thanks Charlie, tie up..... there's critters, Tuta, Moutcha Bay. I've never been out before and don't know what to expect. fuel won't be a problem (I carry 80 gallons) but i thought that a meal, breakfast ect and a shower might be a bonus. i'd like to make this an annual thing, really excited from what i've seen online.

I anchor and if you are sleeping on the boat, why don't you just do that? Lots and lots of good places to anchor. Most of my meals are on the boat and for fuel, meals, and shower when wanted, you have Critter Cove and/or Tahsis Marina.

If looking for a place to just to have a breakfast or a meal as wanted, that would also be Critter, or Tahsis Marina. If you want to tie and have ‘all’ meals… Nootka Sound Resort (Gold River Fishing Lodge) Tahsis Marina, Nootka Island Lodge, Chinootka Lodge, just to name a few. I don’t know if Hoiss Point Lodge is bring you own boat yet, or not?

Hope that helps?

I actually prefer the north end of Nootka Island, as you can see from my anchor sites. My favorite place to anchor is behind Lord Island!

There is a cove right behind Critter Cove. It is the one I have marked 'watch the rock' as there is a rock in the middle of the mouth, but unless it is a minus tide you shouldn't have any problems? Galiano Bay is across the channel from Critter. I have stayed there several nights. You have some lodges in there, but there is plenty of room to anchor. Very well protected! :D

Salmon & Halibut from Nootka Sound, I would be at Bajo Reef, early morning... you can run 240 degrees off the lighthouse for about 12 miles. There will be boats at both. Mornings are usually calm, with the winds picking up around noonish?

Here are some of the places I have anchored in the past. If you have any questions about an area - let me know?
