Lucky me - my husband is taking me up to Nootka Sound to fish the end of July and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if prawn fishing will be okay at that time? If so, any hints on where to put traps? We're familiar with the Barkley Sound area but not Nootka.

Are there fishing opportunities inside at that time of year too? Don't mind going outside at all but love the scenery inside.

BTW - your fishing grounds are amazing and everyone we've met up there has been just fantastic! Thanks for your hospitality. If you come down fish in the NW I hope we are as welcoming.

I have a like/dislike relationship with Americans... I like it when they come up and spend their money, but I dislike it when they come up with their boats... I like them because they help with Canada's security, but I dislike them because I find them arrogant... So... I can't speak for all Canadians but when I see american couples (like last year at Poetts Nook) poaching prawns and springs by the butt load and filling their huge freezers, it doesn't help my like levels... Mind you I didn't say anything to those couples and its bugged me all year since, my bad. This summer if I see anything like that again I will be the first person in their face and I will not be a polite Canadian!

And for all the other Canadians at the campsite that saw what I saw and did not say anything to them, Shame!

Now, that I have unloaded that small bit anger, I'm very sure that you are not anything like that... It's just that your the first american that I've seen on this forum and I needed to off load. My apologies.

To answer your question Nootka sound has a lot of great inside fishing just follow all the hundreds of boats, you just have to pay close attention to the regs, as there are a lot of closures in nootka. The closer to the mouth of the sound, the better the fishing. Outside is best.

As for prawning... I can't answer that.

No worries and no need to apologize!

Many Yanks are definitely very arrogant and feel that the rules don't apply to them. We see it all the time down here too and it's inexcusable. The sad thing is that those type of people don't care ...

Your fishery, the people and the scenery are something we respect. That being said, we respect our own fishery too!

Our experiences up there have always been great and we've made some longtime friendships too.

Thank you for the tips!

T-Bone you can still catch lots of prawns in July, around 300 feet deep. There will be lots of fish by then on the inside. July 29th last year we broght in 4 fish over 40 pounds at Critter. It's a great mix to head outside in the morning for a few hours, then back inside when the wind starts blowing for the rest of the day.

Good luck, where are you staying?

Hey Holmes, good luck fishing. We will be out on Thursday for the weekend, hope to see you on the water or on channel 6. Matt Cyr caught a 30 pound spring two days ago so there are some nice fish waiting for us.

I'll stop in at Critter Friday after we get some work done for a visit.
