Call it British Columbia's Silent Fall. Some of the most prolific spawning grounds on the Fraser River are showing minuscule returns from record brood stocks four years earlier.

At some sites, almost no fish were reported in waters that should be seething with darting, crimson-sided sockeye salmon vying by the millions to lay and fertilize 10 billion eggs.

I think they should be saying "one of the worst years in history for SOCKEYE salmon" As the majority of other runs across the province had unreal Coho returns (which is a good outlook for Chinook in the upcoming couple years) and strong to very strong chinook returns.

I emailed stephen hume: shume@islandnet.com to share some of Charlie's research and he was pretty receptive, I'd expect a follow up article soon with some good info.

I would suggest that everybody email Stephen hume to let him know you want to see more articles done on this issue. If he gets positive feedback he is more likely to stay on the issue.

oh not to worry DFO says they have reached their goal for this run!!!
Quote:
"The management objective for the year was to put the majority of those fish into the system to spawn, and we've met that objective," said Barry Rosenberger, B.C. Interior area director for the DFO's Pacific region.

hmm... I not sure I agree with his thinking?

“there has not been a salmon collapse in the Fraser,” “while this year's sockeye return is the lowest in 50 years, Rosenberger said, “they've rebuilt stocks from worse cases in the past.” Barry Rosenberger, B.C. Interior area director for the DFO's Pacific region, is quoted in The Record: http://www2.canada.com/newwestrecord/ne ... d447340ce8 While on the very same day Stephen Hume in the Vancouver Sun published the DFO return numbers for the Fraser River and many creeks are showing "zero"? http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/wors ... story.html

You can rebuild a run, but you cannot rebuild a "genetic stock" back from "zero"! ONCE THEY ARE GONE... THEY ARE GONE! If you have fish counts of zero ("0), I would have to assume, they are pretty much GONE!

Let's see now, I have to go waaay back in time to about my grade 6 yrs, (best 3 of my life).
Ought Male + Ought Female = Double Ought!!!

Yup, Charlie, your right!
I wonder how many yrs, the esteemed Mr, Rosenberger spent in grade 6? ;)

To kill off millions of sockeye, it has to be a human factor that did it. I think that what most likely happened was that particular run was targeted by illegal commercial fishing somewhere north of us. Because if millions of fish died in the estuary or the river, someone would have seen the beaches littered with dead fish. Also, if there was a pollution problem or predator problem or feed problem, why wouldn't the rest of the salmon runs be affected? By all accounts the fishing this summer was a banner year, almost everywhere on the island. (except stamp springs... but we know what happened there  ) My guess is large scale illegal commercial fishing by other national fleets...
