I saw some people fishing for pinks last year using spinning gear and a fly under a water bobber. I understand the fly set up but am wondering what to look for in a rod. Would a medium action rod suffice? What about the reel, would a trout reel be okay? I usually fish with the fly but on those windy days that prevent me form getting the fly out pulling out a spinning rod might do the trick. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I used my 6' trout rod and spinning real. I saw lots of guys with with longer, heavier rods. They could cast further, but I had lots of fun landing them on the small rod.

I only used spinning gear last year for pinks and coho from the beach. I have a 7 ft medium action Ugly Stick and a $30 reel. I find this set up to be plenty of muscle for both, and can get a reasonable distance with my casts.

Thanks a bunch. My next question was coho. Much appreciated, glad to know I don't need to pick up another rod.

My brother and I were catching pinks last fall and were doing so on 5'5" rods and light reels. For the best fun we used 4-6lb line. Easier to snap but was worth it for the smaller 3-6lb pinks.
This is a great thing to do with kids as well. My 4 year old daughter had a blast bringing in the fish. We would take a photo and back to the water they went.
I hope you get out there and experience it!!
Cheers,
