As anyone tried using anchovie oil on the pellets? I got a huge jug of oil and was told it was the best thing and cheaper then that bottle of scent you buy at the sporting good shops.

Cheers FA,

I have not used Herring Oil but I do use the oil that Ace of Baits sells in their containers. Not sure what type of oil it contains. I find that it does not seem to make a huge difference as I have been putting 1/2 my traps down with just pellets and 1/2 soaked in the oil.

I would definately be interested in hearing about your tests. If you can do a couple of sets using one with and one without and let us know your results.

In anticipation...

I switched at the end of last season from Ace O Baits to the anchovie oil. If you you buy it by the bucket it's the same price as a litter or two of Ace of Baits.

If you are hooked on Ace of Baits tho you should price out a bucket of it and split it up with some friends. Huge savings. A frind of mine can buy a bucket from $70-90. Thats the price of 3-4 litters. The chovie oil is like $50

It seems to be the same. But one is cheaper. A friend that prawns for a living gave me the oil as he couldn't get me a bucket of Ace of bait at the time. He used Ace of bait on his fleet of boats for years but now he uses nothing but choive oil in his bait pail/slop bucket. I mix my bait in advance so the pellets are softer and the oil leaves at a more slow release. By allowing it to soak over night the oil/scents don't wash off as the traps sink.

Softer and oily pellets I find work better.

Just a quick tip for any prawn fishers that also collect a few tuna over the season:

Once the loins have been removed, take the frame and run it through your meat grinder. Shape the ground results into baseball sized rounds, and freeze solid. These will drop right into your bait cups, and thaw slowly "downstairs". If I am going to leave the set overnight or longer, I will toss a few pellets in the cup before the tuna plug goes in.

Give it a whirl, you'll be downright surprised at the level of attraction those oily tuna balls present to prawns!!

Cheers,
Nog

Great idea, I was told that salmon trimings work well to. Same method as above. Tuna sounds better though, but some of us don't get the oppertunity to catch tuna.

Heard a guy say he used a salmon carcus and when he brought it up it was picked clean. All that was left was a perfect skeleton. I have to try it.

Put your salmon guts into an old butter container or the like & freeze them They make great frozen baits in the net bait bags & dissolve in water over an hour or so letting all that scent go We use all the trimmings from salmon & halibut with great results
