Got a fishing buddy irked at me the other day when I phoned him at 6:15 am and cancelled our plans to fish Cameron Lake that morning. My reason being that the barometer reads 102.40. He said "so what". This situation begs a question to the membership so here it is. " How much does the current Barometric Pressure influence your decision to go fishing that day? Very much-sometimes-not at all.

I've often felt that a falling barometer would negatively effect fishing and a nice stable high pressure system was best.

BUT there are so many variables i think its impossible to say for sure. I mean how many days have you been out when everything is perfect but fishing sucks. If I go fishing during the high slack and not get a bite, I do say that high slack sucks for fishing.

so if fishing sucks while at a certain barometer reading, how can you be sure its the baro. pressure that is causing sucky fishing?

Sometimes I regret staying home - but I never regret going fishing.

Can't wrong with that right there

And you call yourself kronik!..... Oh wait, I get it...

I can say I have caught fish(All of them) in any pressure/conditions.... Sometimes it is good when it should be good, sometimes good when it should be bad.

You never know what might grab your line, but I would bet you will catch nothing without gear in the water...

It does.......

Sometimes there are anomalies though.

In my experience guiding in the Stewart Island area there was significant differences in catch rates when fishing in high vs. low pressure. Most often (with some exceptions) high pressure increases your odds of success. The worst case scenario was the first day or two of low pressure.... for some weird reason almost every time it slowed the fishing right down. :?

I'd go fishing anyway.

If you go you stand a chance of catching fish.

If you stay home.....no fish whatsoever...

I just realized this was in the freshwater section  ..... Does high/low pressure sometimes have an influence in freshwater too ? :?

X2.....

Some of my best fishing has been in the rain (in freshwater).

I would pay more attention to the Solunar Tables than I would the weather.

Windy days and also rain seem to produce a different effect on the water, in terms of surface camouflage.

If the water is flat dead calm , your lure is more visible and the fish has more time to look at it and decide whether it wants it or not.

Wind and rain muddle the surface....which adds a different lighting effect to the presentation.

However.....when there is a hatch on and the water is flat calm, the fish will find it easier to nail the insects (in the summer). But they don't rise so well in "chop".

They don't seem to rise so well in rain either.....maybe because it is too confusing to tell floating insects from raindrops hitting the water.

But I also think that fish are less wary of predators when there is rain and / or chop because they can't be seen as easy.

But like I said, for me , regardless of the reason, the fishing has often been good in the rain.
