Maybe it's cause I'm new to fishing but I find the fisheries dfo website incredibly frustrating and really not user friendly. Finding out Limits, allowable sizes, conservation regulations, openings and closures is a matrix of clicking on tons of pages and links trying to find what I want to know. :?
If I fish out of pedderbay marina but run down to east sooke park area what # area am I in?? and how far offshore before I'm into a new region?!?!
Maybe you guys can tell me the minimum size of keepable winter springs and what the limit is???
Also I'm always curious about the conservation edicacy about keeping fish? Is is best to leave these feeders to do their thing and get a chance to get big and spawn??? Are they "teenager" chinooks?? Why didn't they go spawn?? Why do people say big fish breed other big fish?? And at what size should I snap a quick picture and put them back into the ocean, 20# and bigger??? Anybody that wants to explain the nature and cycle of the salmon to me I'd be all ears. Oh course I have looked at websites about the cycle of the salmon, but not in respect to fishing them....I love to fish and cook salmon but want to do so in a respectable way!!
ps- being a new-bee I really enjoy reading this forum :)

Cheers KarrieKoho,

YUP! DFO is cumbersome in all aspects including, but not limited to, their website. It takes a bit before one becomes comfortable in using it with any degree of confidence. However...practice makes perfect.

As to the other questions...quite a lot to go through. I will put my mind to your questions and see what I can forward.

For now...stick to the following: Have Fun Fishing!

Regards,

1)you are in area 20 (on and off shore)
2)45cm is legal size, which is approx 4lbs
3)all winter springs are feeder's
teenager's are 13-19lbs
4)if you happen to catch one that size, keep it.
they are the best eating fish. period.
not likely you will get one over 20lbs until May.
5) these fish are 2-3 year olds and will not spawn
for another 2-3 years.

Good luck, go catch some !

If you fish west of Sheringham the slot limit does not apply so it can be kind of dumb, how does anyone know where you caught your fish.
