I've always had roller type trailers which work well at our local ramp as it's
a shallow drop off.
My current trailer is well worn and i'm thinking about options.
Do many of you use bunk style trailers in the ocean ?
How far do you need the trailer in the water in order to get the boat off
and do you find it hard to manage ?

Thanks

I've had both...definitley prefer bunks. Only time I've ever had a problem is Brechan at a very low tide. Launching and loading solo is very easy with bunks. Drive the boat onto the trailer, the bunks hold the boat while you climb out.

I agree with DOF, bunks are the way to go.

Easy to unload and load. I put the trailer in just so that the tips of the bunks are at the water surface when taking the boat out of the water. And the bunks self center your boat on the trailer.

we have no dock at our ramp, so it becomes more difficult when solo.
i guess if you get the trailer in deep enough, you should be able to float it on
rather than drag it up the bunks.

I agree with the last two posts.
To launch, if I am alone, I just hook the bow rope to the trailer Winch stand, and back in. As soon as the boat floats off, I pull ahead so that I can get at the rope and tie up the boat. The boat will sit on the bunks without any danger of rolling off with the winch unhooked, until you actually float it off.
I have vertical quide posts on the trailer, which make it very easy to keep the boat centered over the trailer while recovering the boat, and usually, I just back the trailer into the water so that the front of the bunks are just covered. Then I lead the boat over the trailer, and winch it up to whereit should go and pull ahead. The quide posts keep the boat centered over the trailer, and it just falls into place.

Not that hard to pull up on bunks either with a good hand winch, I pulled my grady up on the bunks solo without any problems - your boat will be no problem DS.

Forgot to add, I always felt better with bunks on those bumpy roads. I always feel like rollers focus the weight in too small an area on the hull.
