While there are not a lot of coho about on the inner Banks (yet) this year they are present on the outside ones. Their numbers start to pick up as you wander out from South/Lighthouse banks towards the Wreck, and pick up even more so as you near Big Bank. The outside edge of Big Bank and into the deep is stupid with them. Lots of feed out there, and it seems they are content to hang with that.

Not many are wandering out that far. This year we simply haven't had to, and the better spring fishing has indeed been close. Give it a little time. Within 2 weeks we'll start to hear the complaints about being tough to get through the coho once again - my prediction for what it's worth...

Cheers,
Nog

Cheers Nog,

Thanks for the great info. You are correct: our trips to Ucluelet only required us to fish the lighthouse bank for full limits of big springs and halibut and, with the price of fuel and time, we were very content to fish there. I am sure you are correct about the coho.

Hope to see you out there next week when we do our charter for the Fishing Vancouver Island Charter winnner!

Finished up in Ukee. Started to get into Coho at 80' with hootchies but, another so-so day. Lots of hits and not many sticks. 193 Tomic @ 123' got a nice Spring. Just about everything worked at least for 1 strike at least.
Commercial opening may effect fishing for the next few daze.

Cheech, after we passed you on your way back we dropped one deep and picked up this 60-70 lb er?? Hali, the scale smashed 50 lbs before the tail would lift off the ground....
Salmon bite was ok, one every 45 minutes it seemed except for around 11 am there was a bit of a flurry of small guys and some keepers. We moved off the south bank and went 135 feet in 280 feet water, hit 2 more before calling it quits at 3 pm.

Further to the report by Cheech

Fri quite rough some decent fish no real size lotsa C&R on small Springs 10-12#.No Coho none.

Sat rough/cold fishing still fair.No Coho.

Sun weather quite good water smooth fishing on the slow side did hook two (2) Coho.

Overall a good trip with a couple guys who had never met each other-always great to fish with experienced people who know the ropes.

One thing worth noting-many of the Springs we caught punched far above their weight-I boated a couple that weighed around 18# that during the fight I would have sworn were closer to 30#-real tigers.

A few pics.
