Fished Victoria Lake today, in my fly tube. Not a sniff. This was my first time there since moving to Port Alice six months ago; I was very surprised to see how big it is - reminded me of Sprout Lake in Port Alberni. Needless to say that me and my tube only covered a small fraction of the surface. Given all the reading I've done on the lake, I imagine a person needs to get down deeper than I was. Must say, absolutely stunning surroundings; only a couple handfulls of cabins scattered along the banks, snow capped mountains, lots of coves, great shore cover everywhere and it was like glass until 4:30 and then a stiff wind came up. I'll return soon, and go deep! Stay in touch with any success/tips and I'll do the same.
Cheers!
Just wait until the black ants hatch out.....it will be some of the best trout fishing you will ever see. Used to go there with my dad when I was a kid & all I can say is WOW!! Bows & cutties up to 5lbs just trolling a black ant around just below the surface. We would easily go through a dozen flies in a weekend mostly because of the big cutties that would just tear them to shreds. It was usually excellent fishing by the May long weekend, but could turn on earlier depending on the warm weather. If the ants aren't out, don't give up on the flies just yet. We also had good success on Royal Coachman, Lyoness, ( with feather wings, not hackle ), bumble bee patterns, mayflies, doc spratleys, bitch creek & mosquitoes. Mostly in size 6 with 8 & 10 for the mosquitoes. IF all else fails, the good ole' worm & gangtroll is always a good go to set up.
Good luck & let us know how you make out in the coming weeks.
