if I had to choose one or the other I'd use spoons but if its a sand bottom needlefish hootchies will almost always outfish spoons and many times bait too.

Did someone say Pilchard?

We have had a huge increase in the Pilchards over the last 3 years. This has been a great bait for the salmon, most of the fish you catch are full of pilchards.

So why not have a lure that is like the bait?

I won the Critter Cove derby last year on the Codfather spoon with a 41# spring. This year I've caught hundreds of fish on that spoon. The other lure that produced many fish is the Codfather plug, same pattern as the spoon. It's a 639 with the black dots in a tubby.
