Fishing was OK...we drifted 16 miles on the Bogachiel the first day & shore fished the Sol Duc & Quillayute the second day. Hooked most of our fish on the Bogie during the drift, but the damn battery in the new camera crapped out after only a few hours, so I've only got a couple of pics.....NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL!!! Looking for a second battery on E-Bay now. In total, we managed to hook 14 fish and land 4. The rivers are amazing....LOTS of very fishy waters & beautiful scenery. Wish we had more time to explore & do some serious hiking....two days just isn't enough time to cover all of the available water. Biggest fish was between 16-18lbs.....talked to a few of the guides & they said fishing was a bit slow right now, but they have been getting quite a few fish over 20lbs. One guy hooked a 24-25lber on the upper Calawah that morning...managed to snap a couple of quick pics of it right at shore before the line broke & he said they killed a 21lber the day before. He was telling his other buddy that was his 14th fish over 20lbs so far this year.....he felt fishing was a little SLOW!!! I could only imagine how good it would be down there if the natives weren't netting at least two days a week. Every year they get one or two fish in the gill nets that are over 30lbs & LOTS that are 20+. The whole place reminds me of how things were here 25 years ago....You can fish bait, TANDEM BARBED hooks if you want & believe it or not, KILL one WILD steelhead a year. I can't believe they still have such good numbers of big wild fish left with those kind of rules. Another strange thing we noticed is that almost nobody fishes from shore....it seems like everyone has a drift boat or rubber raft & that is the way they fish. There is fairly good shore access, but it seems like everybody wants to line up the drift boats and head out. Didn't seem to really affect the fishing all that much, all of the boats we talked to were into between 4-8 fish that morning, so everyone seemed happy. It ( The OP ) is probably the best shot at getting a 20lb steelhead that is fairly close to home.....it is an hour & a half to Victoria, about an hour ferry ride on the Coho & then about another hour drive out to Forks. There are four main rivers to fish ( Five if you count bar fishing or plunking on the Quillayute ) The Bogachiel, Sol Duc, Calawah & Hoh. All have BIG fish in them, you just need to spend some time chasing them. Here are a couple of pics I did manage to get.......
That first fish was one of the toughest fish I've ever seen.....He had a seal bite by his tail, net marks all over his body & claw marks from an eagle on both sides of his back.Seemed like everything was trying to kill this poor bugger.....I was happy to see him swim away..
