I'm kinda new to salmon fishing, I have fished all my life for other stuff back east though.

anyways I'm tired of not catching fish in Nanaimo and want to plan a week trip on the west coast this summer.

Where can I go with a smaller boat and have a good chance at catching salmon and maybe halibut?

What month would be best?

Any info for a green horn would be much appriciated!

What is your definition of "smaller boat"? That makes a big difference.

nootka sound might be a great choice for a small boat, not sure you'd get a chance to go out where the halibut are though.

Barkey Sound would be a good option as well. In the spring you may have a shot at a halibut on the inside. (species opening dependant.) I have shot the canal in smaller boats. Early AM up and last couple hours of daylight back for best water conditions. If you're not comfortable there, the long bumpy road to Bamfield is an option.

I think it varies but the two times I drove the bamfield road it wasn't bad, just dusty. Fun place to fish, lots of options.

Yup! The road is often in good shape, but when it's bad, it's bad! It's been called the trailer graveyard by many who have done the drag LOL! Poet Nooks website has a link listing current road conditions by the way.
I also prefer shooting the canal as it is cheaper in fuel for me and faster to boot. OK well not faster anymore, sailboat and all LOL!But one hell of a lot cheaper and infinately more comfortable and quiet.
That said, once into Barkley Sound, you should be able to find a place to fish under various (within reason) weather conditions.

Whoa Nelly!!!.....now wait just a minute.......

Quote Firsttime:- "I'm tired of not catching fish in Nanaimo"...

If you can't catch fish in Nanaimo, you may have trouble elsewhere as well..

Tell me what, when, where and how you were fishing in Nanaimo....and also what you were using....

Is your boat aluminum?
What equipment do you have?

What tackle were you fishing?

All the juicy details....... 8-)

Good point made. Nanaimo has had a few years of really great fishing. The area you've fished is not the problem.
