I always wondered why there was a "Halibut Bank" within the Georgia Straight, which is a few miles out from the Sunshine Coast. You'd think that name would suggest that there was once decent numbers of hali's out there. I heard second hand that there was a commercial test fishery done out there recently and they were completely skunked.

It was scraped clean in the 1920's and has never recovered.

About 20 years ago I put in some time out there and didn't come up with anything at all except for Dogfish-about 10 years ago a friend of mine caught one very small Hali-just before they closed it for good.

Note that the Hali now present feed mostly on the deepwater Pacific Cod biomass out in Georgia Straight- so they move around a bunch.

Always a few overwintering in Howe Sound though-that population was never completely extirpated.

Ucluelet for sure for guaranteed hali's. You don't have to go to the big bank for em either. 4-7 Miles out and still see shore is productive.

Picked up 40 or so last year between 18 and 50 lbs.
Lots of half day charters available on the docks if you ask around.

Cheers,
D

Renfrew is close at hand, an easy drive and has a number of good guides who will target what you want. Personally I recommend No Banannas ( Trevor), Bruce Miller in " Miller Time, John Wells ( Hourston on the Chat Board) or Marcus Kennett from Duncan"s Bucky's Sport Shop. Lots of halibut out there early on, and as someone said earlier, ask for an anchor trip to target larger hali's
