Hi Guys,
Where on Van Isle would you suggest going on a Halibut charter ?. Last summer I went on a Salmon/ Halibut charter out of Tahsis but, we never ended up getting to fish for Halibut. A year and half back I caught one jigging out of Silva Bay and lost it at the boat when it straightened out all three of the hooks on my jig, didn't have the means to boat it anyway. Needless to say, this season I want to catch one, they are one my favorite eating fish to to boot.

what time of year are you thinking of going? Do you want to salmon fish as well or just halibut?

Thanks,
I'm thinking July or August and I would want to fish for Salmon and Halibut with the Halibut fishing taking precedence.

ah ok - so that rules out Victoria/Sooke unless you like dogfish. Renfrew or bamfield might be a good choice but I'd request to anchor up instead of going to the chicken ranch for ping pong paddles.

I never thought about it until now but, what would be the best time of year to go for Halibut?

I'd go Winter harbor on the outside offshore.

Or the banks offshore of Ukee or Bamfield in April or May-after that a lot of fish head back into the deeps.

Swiftsure out of Port Renfrew works too but again it's weather dependent and you need to talk to your guide about your priorities not his-if the guy won't listen then try someone else.

Well, After reading these suggestions, I'm now thinking May, since our priority would be Halibut, if not the sole purpose of the trip. And I'm not settled on a location but, I thinking Mid to south Island. Does anyone have any suggestions as to guides ? Thanks
