Herring Imitation

You can see why the green/white and black/white spoon is so effective by these pictures. When herring are viewed underwater the light reflects off the fish differently on the lower half to the top half. This makes a sharp color contrast down the midline. These patterns do a good job of matching the color difference but the colors could be matched more effectively. The black is to dark and the light green is to light. I have a few ideas on what the colors should be and they do not look like a herring out of the water but will match it better at the depth.

Sorry the spoon pic is so poor but you get the idea. No fancy detail as all it does is catch more fisherman. Simple color differences and not quite split 50%/50%

Here's a few for you to consider

Start with the easiest:

Image

Chrome finish 5 inch blank. Painted only on once side, chrome the back side.
Blue leading edge with striations fading to turquoise close to lateral line.
Graduated dots down center.
Yellow belly should run up behind gill plate and to nose.
Yellow Eye.
Flipper tail optional.

Then a Herring:

Image

Chrome back side - 4.5 inch blank.
Mother of Pearl base on painted side.
Blue Green Mist leading edge fading to light turquoise at lateral line.
Scale Pattern on leading edge.
Light dusting of pink/purple over flanks.
Yellow Eye.
Flipper should be on this one.

Then one I would dearly love to see!

Image

6 inch slender spoon blank, chrome back side.
Mother of Pearl base on painted side.
Dark Blue/Green along leading edge, fading to blue-green mist then to light turquoise to lateral line.
VERY pronounced emerald green (or even lighter) stripe along lateral line. Would be extremely good if this could be in glow and/or metallic paint!
Striations along length of leading edge and 1/3 of belly to tail.
Flipper tail should also be on this one.

To get the right flutter suggest this type of curve:

Would be even finer were the top leading edge to be striated metal (stamped) along the leading edge.

All should be constructed with welded rings, and a good swivel on the leading end.

Feel free to PM is you have any questions. Would very much like to see the needlefish developed - methinks it would prove to be a KILLER!

Cheers,
Nog

Hey nog i was thinking of something similar for the needlefish but how would the narrow spoon hold that shape after getting pounded during hit/fight? If you make it thicker guaged metal its action would likely be poor. Ive seen a few narrow old spoons but not much on the market now. Sharp looking spoons though! Im back to the drawing board with something a little less simple.

Likely a couple of ways to do what's required methinks. We use rather thin McKnight needlefish that have a crease along the center and at both ends which gives both the right wobble and strength. Another version we sometimes employ is slightly concave on the chrome side, and they seem to hold up well. I believe the one I illustrated above would be pricey to produce, but if it catch's them like I think it would, it would prove well worth the effort!

Looking forward to your next one Kelly!

Nog

Nog- That needlefish looks MONEY... I know it would slay for me up @ Quatsino.
I would consider the same pattern with purple/black on the upper area as an additional colour pattern in the same design. If it would include UV properties, then it would even better, as I've noticed black/purple UV based hootchies slay when they are on mature needlefish.
